General Characteristics:-

  1. Raw Cashew nuts shall be the dried ripe nuts of Anacardium occidentale L grown in Kerala and Maharashtra State.

  2. The raw cashew nuts shall:-

  3. Have the shape colour and other characteristics of the variety;

  4. Be well dried and mature.

  5. Be free from any musty odour,

  6. Be reasonably free from extraneous matter, and

  7. Be free from mould, diseases decayed nuts and insect attack except to the extent as specified under column

  6. Be reasonably free from extraneous matter, and

  7. Be free from mould, diseases decayed nuts and insect attack except to the extent as specified under column 5

Raw Cashew nuts shall be –

  1. Intact, firm, clean, of same variety and
  2. Free from, visible foreign matter, abnormal external moisture, foreign smell.

Sampling

  • 5 % or minimum one container shall be randomly selected for sampling.

  • 100 gm shall be drawn from each selected container and shall be mixed homogenously, called as primary sample.

  • 100 gm shall be drawn from primary sample called as Laboratory sample.

Definitions

  • Extraneous matter: includes stones, dust, dirt, parts of dried fruits and leaf, etc.

  • Void nuts: in which there are no kernels.

  • Immature nuts: the nuts, the kernels of which are not properly developed and/or shriveled.

  • Damaged and discolored nuts: the nuts containing discolored kernels, decayed, diseased and broken nuts or mechanical injury, materially affecting the quality.
