Sampling

  • The lint cotton of one variety having reasonably uniform characteristic offered for sale at one time shall constitute a lot.

  • From each of the bale so selected the representative adequate material may be drawn.

Definitions

Optional parameters are voluntary and may be analyzed as per buyer-seller agreement.

  • Micronaire (MIC) is a measure of the air permeability of compressed cotton fibers. It is often used as an indication of fiber fineness and maturity.

  • Trash: often referred to as non-lint, commonly comprises fragments of leaves, bark and grass, as well as particles of sand and dust.

Extra Long Staple > 32 2 8
Long Staple >27 and <=32 3 8
Superior Medium Staple >25 and <=27 3 8
Medium Staple >20 and <=25 4 8
Short Staple <=20 4 8

Tolerance

  • For staple length, tolerance of +_10% shall be applicable
  • For closed boll cotton varieties like CJ-73, V-797, Kalagin and Waghad, irrespective of staple length, maximum admissible trash content will be 6%.

Sampling

Sample for determination of various requirements shall be drawn in accordance with 3 of IS 4952 and the gross sample shall be reduced in accordance with 4 of IS 4952. However, for determination of trash content, the weight of tufts drawn 15671/2021/TECH 341 from each sub-square be decided in such a way that the reduced sample meets the requirements of IS 4871.

Definitions

  • Trash includes Foreign matter present in bales of raw cotton, excluding abnormal items, such as, stone, timber, pieces of old iron, etc
  • Span Length - The minimum length spanned by a specified percentage of the fibres in a randomly aligned representative tuft. Thus, 2.5 percent span length is the length exceeded by only 2.5 percent of the total number of fibres in the tuft; similarly, 50 percent span length is the length exceeded by 50 percent of fibres.
  • Staple Length - 2.5 percent span length determined as per IS 233 shall be the measure of staple length.

Optional parameters are voluntary and may be analyzed as per buyer-seller agreement.
