Sal Seed shall:

  1. Be the dried ripe seed of Shorea robsta Gaertn, family Dipterocarpaceae.

  2. Be wholesome, free from moulds, weevils, obnoxious smell, deleterious substance and all other impurities except to the extent indicated in the schedule.

  3. Have uniform size, shape and colour

Definitions

  1. Foreign matter: Shall include dust, stones, lumps of earth, leaves any other edible or non-edible seed.

  2. Immature and Shrivelled seed: Shall be the seeds which are not properly developed and / or shrunken.

  3. Damaged and Weevilled: Shall be the seeds which are damaged mechanically or by mould those showing internal discolouration of seeds materially affecting the quality. Weevilled seeds shall be those seeds which are partially or wholly bored or eaten by weevils or other insects.

  4. Split and broken seeds: Splits shall be the seeds which are broken in two parts length – wise. Broken seeds shall be those which are smaller than splits.

General Characteristics

Sal kernels shall

  1. Be the kernels obtained from the dried, ripe seeds of shorea robusta Gaertn, family Dipterocarpeceae.

  2. Be reasonably dried, wholesome, free from visible moulds, weevils obnoxious smell, deleterious susbtances and all other impurities except to the extent indicated in the schedule.

  3. Have uniform shape, size and colour.

Definitions

  1. Foreign matter: shall include dust, stones, lumps of earth, leaves, outer shell of seed, any other edible or non-edible seed/kernels.

  2. Immature and Shrivelled: shall be the kernels which are not properly developed and / or shrunken.

  3. Damaged weevilled kernels: are those which are damaged mechanically or by mould/insects or those showing internal discolouration materially affecting the quality. Weevilled kernels shall be those kernels which are partially or wholly bored or eaten by weevils or other insects.

Sal Seeds shall be

  1. intact, firm clean, reasonably uniform size & shape, color characteristics to the variety

  2. free from visible foreign matter, abnormal external moisture, foreign smell

Sampling

  • 5 % or minimum one container shall be randomly selected for sampling

  • 200g shall be drawn from each selected container and shall be mixed homogenously, called as primary sample.

  • 200g shall be drawn from primary sample called as Laboratory sample.

Definitions

  • Extraneous /Foreign matter:- Includes inorganic and organic matter. The inorganic matter shall include sand, gravel, dirt, pebbles, stones, glass and metallic pieces, lumps of earth, clay and mud. Organic matter shall include husk, chaff, straw, weed seeds and other inedible grains.

  • Broken seeds: -Kernels or pieces of kernels that are sprouted or internally damaged as a result of heat, moisture, weather or microbes, discoloured, and immature seed.

  • Insect damaged seeds: shall be those seeds which are wholly or partly bored or eaten by the weevils.

Optional parameters are voluntary and may be analyzed as per buyer-seller agreement.
